Kubeflow + MLflow on Juju with Microk8s


How to get it running on an Ubuntu system:

If you've not installed microk8s before:

getent group microk8s || sudo groupadd microk8s
sudo usermod -a -G microk8s $USER
sudo chown -f -R $USER ~/.kube
sudo su - $USER

Start up a microk8s cluster and install kubeflow & mlflow and relate them together:

export DOCKER_USERNAME=<docker-hub-username>
export DOCKER_ACCESS_TOKEN=<docker-hub-password>
bash integration_test_microk8s

Set the docker hub username and access token to those of a docker hub pro account to avoid docker hub ratelimits.

Note: This will wipe out an existing microk8s cluster, so use with care.

Note: This may need to be retried several times, due to various Juju/Kubeflow bugs. For example if you get an error message or a 403 error after logging in.

Note: Min 14GB RAM needed, 50GB disk space.

Open and log in with the username and password given in the output of the above command.

Create a new notebook server, taking care to specify the mlflow-minio configuration. This will ensure that the correct environment variables are set so that the MLflow SDK can connect to the MLflow server.


Now open the notebook server and paste the following code into two cells:

This will install the required dependencies.

Run both cells and observe that your model metrics are recorded in MLflow!

To access MLflow, run:

microk8s kubectl get services -A|grep mlflow

And open the mlflow ClusterIP in the browser with :5000 on the end.
